Jane O’Connor delivers disability awareness training in a unique and engaging way. Jane lives with mobility impairment and brings her own personal experiences and those of people with other disabilities to the training. Training delivered this way encourages participants to look at their own attitudes, values and beliefs towards others in society, including those with a disability, in addition to looking at definitions of disability, recognition of barriers to inclusion in society and understanding the law in relation to disability discrimination. This leaves delegates with a positive image of disability and a proactive service delivery approach.

Jane’s background is broad and varied. She suffered a spinal cord injury during her final year of registered nurse training which meant a change of career. Jane was young career woman with a very young family and suddenly thrust into this new world, where both attitudes and the physical environment meant exclusion, one she had never ‘noticed’ before. Jane returned to higher education, first studying law, then gaining a degree in Social Care & Social Policy so that she could work with others towards removing these barriers.
